BEK Communications Receives USDA Community Connect Grant

Steele, N.D. – October 22, 2014 – BEK Communications Cooperative is pleased to announce that the company has been awarded a USDA Community Connect Grant in order to build a fiber-to-the-home network in northeast Morton County and Southeast Oliver County in central North Dakota. BEK is one of several companies located throughout the United States that received funding, either through USDA grants or loans, to help build advanced communication infrastructures in rural areas, including broadband services.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack noted that $190.5 million in telecommunications grants and loans was awarded to companies. “Modern telecommunications and broadband access is now as essential to the businesses and residents of rural America as electricity was in the 1930s.” Vilsack said. “USDA is committed to ensuring that rural Americans have robust broadband and telecommunications systems. The investments we are announcing today will provide broadband in areas that lack it, help rural-serving public television stations begin using digital broadcasts, and support other telecommunications infrastructure improvements."

“It has been our vision for more than 60 years to provide quality communication services to rural North Dakota. The residents of rural Morton and Oliver counties were lacking reliable service and they helped guide us in our grant efforts. BEK would not have received the Community Connect grant without the tremendous support we received from city, county and state citizens and civic leaders. We are looking forward to the work ahead of us,” said BEK CEO Derrick Bulawa.
